The game features a multiplayer aspect in which the player can alternatively take the role of Julianna, an agent tasked to protect the time loop and take out Colt. The routines of the people in a particular district vary depending on what time of day the player enters it, and the player's actions in one district can affect the routines in the others. Each day is divided into four periods (Morning, Noon, Afternoon, and Evening), and moving between the island's four districts (Updaam, Karl's Bay, Fristad Rock, and The Complex) causes time to advance. The time loop in Deathloop is not strictly timed and is aimed to give players more time and freedom to take out these eight targets in one loop. They must avoid or take out guards, learn the patterns of Colt's targets, and to figure out the right order to eliminate said targets using guns, melee attacks, or other environmental means. The player uses a combination of stealth, parkour, attack skills, guns, gadgets, and powers as in Arkane's previous games Dishonored and Prey to move about the game world. Should Colt die before taking out the eight targets, he will wake back up at the start of the loop. In Deathloop, the player takes on the role of Colt, an assassin stuck in a time loop who has been tasked to take out eight targets called Visionaries across the island of Blackreef before midnight, as leaving even one alive will cause the time loop to reset and undo his work. It was not the same Crossing, but it was still a crossing. In Deathloop, Colt's inner thoughts sometimes appear as text in the game. “In the end marketing didn't go for it because Deathloop was so cool, but we tried The Crossing because you cross a lot. “At some point, discussed calling this game The Crossing,” Bakaba revealed in a separate interview with IGN. In fact, those elements almost dictated Deathloop’s identity. It was ultimately cancelled, but this idea presented the perfect opportunity to bring back some of the project’s ideas. We went all in almost immediately.” The Crossing was an Arkane project from 2009, in which a single-player campaign was infused with multiplayer elements. “Someone said ‘What if you could play them?’, and then someone said ‘Like The Crossing?’. “It's something that just came out of a weird brainstorm about this one NPC,” recounted Bakaba. Over time, this idea evolved into a multiplayer component. The concept for Julianna was born out of a wish for there to be an enemy called The Nemesis, which would never be in a predictable place on Deathloop’s Blackreef island. “We figure that if you care about how you look in a first-person game, that's probably because you want to play with others, so that's why we reward you with them,” explained Bakaba. That's something that we do to ensure diversity in encounters.” PvP is also the only way to unlock cosmetic skins for both Julianna and Colt. “For instance, after playing three hours of Julianna, will have a different character than mine. “Those rewards are randomised,” Bakaba revealed. Those points will unlock new tools for Julianna to use she starts with next to nothing, but will soon earn new weapons, powers, upgrades, and trinkets. Regardless of your approach, Deathloop will score Julianna players based on their activities within a PvP session. What's not clear right now is whether you'll be able purposely join a friend's game to help them out as Julianna – it may be that you can help other players, but that whose game you join is out of your hands. Julianna has been written as an ambiguous character with a connection to Colt, meaning both aggressive and allied playstyles will still make sense in the wider narrative. Play All the way on the other end of the spectrum, some players may want to have their Julianna “be friendly” with Colt, essentially acting as a co-op partner – “Because why the f**k not?” said Bakaba.
